Constant current and constant voltage

Using a zener diode limit the voltage of a current source. If the zener wasn't there then the voltage would continue to rise if the current source was just connected to the capacitor. This limits that. It is possible to get more current through the resistor when the switch is flipped, if you lower the resistance this will happen until the capacitor has discharged and reached equilibrium.
