Drives a 3ph motor with just one phase and a capacitor. In this case i used a star switching but it also works with triangle.

With the right size capacitor this circuit could work with a two phase motor, in reality it would not work well with a 3 phase motor.

its done on a regular basis with 3 phase motors... the ampere measurement is just wrong in this simulation. there would be two not quite oposing phases and aphase between them so its rather elyptic. but it does work, just googe the name.

The only problem with this design is that with a typical rotating magnetic field you can achieve nearly 100% torque minus slip. With this, your magnetic field will be elliptical as you have stated, which would be a detriment to the available torque. Otherwise, the concept is sound.

The theory is sound, but as I stated, it would not work well, and because of it's inefficiency, probably not used commercially.

The capacitor works just like it does on a single phase motor, only to determine phase rotation as a starter winding. The other two windings are single phased. You have to de-rate the motor's horse power a good bit, now the motor can't operate the intended load, then you need to buy a bigger and more expensive 3 phase motor, or install a single phase motor. Efficiency and durability is compromised, power factor is ruined.
