I just came up with a name for circuits like this- I'll call them "cheat'o'blinkies". As in this example a cheat'o'blinkie by definition is an AC powered flasher circuit, typically using LEDs and made to show some "effect" by means of said AC source(s). In my time here I have seen many cheat'o'blinkies posted by other users, and I've never liked them. Why? Because its cheating- and at it's best, cheating is lazy. Cheat'o'blinkies are not real circuits and cannot be built in real life. So why bother? There are far better video games out there if all you want to do is solve a puzzle- they are plentiful, and I'm sure many are free. Just remember: play street fighter for a hundred years, it will never teach you how to throw a fireball. And if you made one thousand cheat'o'blinkies here, you would still not know how to build a real circuit..
