Would the exotic model include MOSFETs on the transistors (like IGBT) to eliminate the current load on the logic gates. It would be more power efficient on the control side and maybe reduce cost? Idk.

you could drive it however you want. I use a ULN2003 or 2004, they're good for a few watts. how big must your Stepper motors be if you're thinking about igbt?
