I think I'm getting there... is this any good? Any suggestions to boost the gain?

Not quite there yet. Almost. Not quite. How are you calculating the resistor and capacitor values? Also, for common emitter, the bypass cap goes from emitter to ground, and the output is at the collector. You'll also have a cap from collector to load. I think that's what you're going for.

For common base, input is at the emitter, output is at the collector, base is tied to ground. It will have low input impedance, and high output impedance. You'll get voltage gain from it, but not current gain. For common collector, input is base, output is emitter, which is then tied to ground. It's also known as an emitter follower. It will have a high input impedance, and low output impedance. You can forget about voltage gain, but it will provide decent current gain. You'll usually see it coupling a high impedance input source to a low impedance load. For common emitter, input is base, output is at the collector, emitter is tied to ground. It will have both high input and output impedance, it's capable of both voltage and current gain. It is the most common and frequently used.

Thanks. Those are really useful comments. Learning a bit more every day.

Me too. That's the point. :) No one here started out knowing it all, even though lots of people try to act like they did.
