The N version is not compareable with your P one.

No, pmos circuit is common source topology, but your nmos is common drain. But to compare them they have to have the same topology. Comon source or drain (CS or CD).

It wasn't my intention to compare them. The intention was to demonstrate a solution to acheive high side switching using NFETs

I think the right one is not a solution. See how big the nmos is in comparison to the left solution. And that big mosfet to drive this little lamp. Its in best case a ugly work around.

a box-fresh nmos held open can not drive this little lamp. why don't you fork it and fix it?

Box-fresh? They are to small to find in a box. It was you who used the terminus "simple". Yes sure i can fix it for you and make it simple

i think you are stuck in a world of simulating, it's not always going to be a 'little lamp' - in this use case it's a 8A load i'm modelling for - without proper spice models it is impossible to reflect those details here. also wind your neck in.

At least you learned, things are not so "simple" like your "simple example" statement. 8A, fine! Lets start here, and we will see how "simple" it is http://everycircuit.com/circuit/5282317232242688
