I redesigned this after some person in the community. Basically uses a capacitor as a buffer for a constant source. As the cap slowly gets filled, it slowly raises voltage on the transistor's base (adj). As the base rises, the output of the transistor increases voltage to the leds. You can adjust the sizes of the resistors and caps, but keep in mind that they need to be realistic values. (a 10milifarad cap is not very small, and a 318kilo ohm resistor isnt very popular. This needs to fit in a car's interior light housing, so space is limited.)
I could be wrong about all of these specs.
Edit: thanks to skele for letting me know of how to fade it off. a very simple solution that I overlooked. (The on/off switch was cutting off the transistor's gate AND the input/emitter. it just needs to cut the gate.)
Edit2: something else I overlooked: the power to the circuit is being cut. So, the fade off is being cut too. Fade on still works, though. Guess I'll need to use a cap as a battery to make the LEDs fade...sounds like a redesign. 😓
