This circuit makes LED's fade on and off.
The circuit charges a 400uf capacitor and the transistor amplifies the current entering the 400uf capacitor and delivers 100 times this value to the LED's via the collector-emitter pins.
The circuit needs 9v for operation since pin 2 of the 555 detects 2/3 Vcc before changing the state of the output.

Depending on the sim speed, the "fade on" takes approximately 5 seconds and then remains illuminated for several more seconds before "fading off" so please be patient.
