I did the same short of thing in the 80s, I used an old AM radio tuned close to the freq of the circuit. When metal got close to the coil it changed the freq and you could hear it in the radio. You have to find a freq for the circuit that is a factor of the radio freq you want to use because the 555 is not very stable at khz range
