Why can I not put two dc sources in parallel

Removing one of the 5 volt sources allows this to work. A simple fix would be to have a single 10v source instead of 2 5v sources (consolidate your 2 5v sources into one big source). This is technically shorted with two power supplies feeding each other.

To run the motor needs to be about the same voltage rating as the power supply, in real life the wire has some resistance, put a 1 mohm resistor in series with the negative legs. Try http://everycircuit.com/circuit/5390574915682304

Use a diode on the positive side of the source to stop revere flow. Theoritically it is possible. But in simulation it does consider all possible precuitions.
