I am wondering, why is the output polarity different from the input ?

its the only disadvantages of buck boost converter that it reverse the output polarity . just search for SEPIC converter and try it . for any help contact me ramy.a.zenhom@gmail.com . regards . Eng Ramy

because the inductor pulls current through the diode and the load. since the load is connected to 0V on the other side, the volts have to drop to allow current to flow
