Concept is good, just need to adjust the component values, zener diode is probably not required, maybe a anti-fly wheel diode. Consider http://everycircuit.com/circuit/4668297359654912

The circuit improvements worked well. For it to be built and working, it needs to run at there 1 second rate as this is the real time simulation. Most led circuits require a led resistor, they handle any slight voltage changes that would otherwise be massive led current excursions.
