Are you aware that more than 80% of the power drawn from power supply is dissipated as heat by the resistor, and only less than 20% are used by the LED?

Reduce resistor to 500 Ohm to give LED it correct 20mA, unless you are intentionally keeping it low.

Why can this circuit 'overheat'? You have a 12V supply and 0.01A current making a total power of 0.12W !! The resistor power is approx 10V x 0.01A = 0.1W. Quick, call the fire brigade!!

@vishalwap7 your circuit is perfectly OK as it is. You could increase LED brightness by reducing resistor value as I mentioned earlier :-)
