It is possible to create a 4:1 multiplexer using three 2:1 multiplexers. Please note that the logic design of the original 4:1 MUX is faster and cheaper than this version.
It is possible to create any size multiplexer or demultiplexer with lower-level multiplexers or demultiplexers respectively.
