This circuit shows how a simple distortion guitar pedal works. It's just two diodes that cut off the peaks of the signal.
The input signal is +/- 2V, which is more than what you get out from a guitar. So you would need an opamp to amplify the input signal. And an opamp on the output to separate it from the following stages.
