Another adder, this time with 4bit inputs. The red displays show the input in hexadecimal, and the green displays show the output in hexadecimal.

Hmmm, "simplest" maybe yes here on EC. Except you start thing about an analoge solution.... or think about a real world simple solution. A solution were you have 2times 4bit input makes 256 possible combinations and just a single bit out! One can make that with a preprogrammed ROM 8bit in 1 bit out. Wouldn't it be simpler then this?

Well, I think it's simplest when limited to using the six basic logic gates.
