Rheostat was popular term in days of antique radio receivers when radio operator would control filament brightness in tubes such as the 199 or 200.
Potentiometer is top circuit working as continuous voltage divider with three connections to variable resistor.
Rheostat is bottom circuit with two connections to variable resistor.
