The principle of a three phase motor in a star-triangle scheme. Toggle the switch to switch from star to triangle. In star mode the power is 1/3 of triangle mode since the voltage is sqrt(3) more in triangle than in star thus the current is sqrt(3) more and the resulting power is sqrt(3)*sqrt(3) and thus 3 times as much.
