Using a PNP transistor, the control pins for shifting and latching a 595 shift register can be merged into one pin. I'm not to sure about the resistances involved on the pins themselves, but I think with the limiting resistor on the base of the transistor the power consumption can be minimized.

Oddly.. This should have worked, but I couldn't get it to... Instead, I just tied the pins together as I found a reference to do so in the datasheet. (It was hidden as a footnote in the timing section.) That works nicely, but you have to shift one extra time than needed.
