As you said you wanted to see a faster version using flip flops. This is faster but still real slow. Let's hope they fix the flip flop speed on next EC update

I've used less flip flops than your circuit but got more logic gates for reversing direction. Also got mine booting differently from yours, check it out ;)

Dude you are the best! This certainly is simpler than mine, but yeah EC makes it look the same at the output ;)

We actually built a "ping pong" game using 7 leds and only logic components where two players should like catch the led with a pushbutton and if you release the button the lights imitate a ball being sent to the other side. So we built a nightrider effect actually..only thought about that now! Xd

It was alot but we used shift registers and counters which made it a bit easier.
