What you made is basically a resonant circuit. For modulations to happen there needs to be at least two signal sources - a carrier wave generator and a function/signal generator. Only then you could toy around to find how amplitude, phase and frequency modulators are made and how they work.

Yes, for a continues modulation it needs some active non linear components. However, if you want you can synthesis a spectrum like a AM modulated signal as long as ringing is present. Check this http://everycircuit.com/circuit/5241879278125056
