Work in progress. Added 10nF AC bypass to the base of the NPN, to dump a large negative transient. This is because I blew up an NPN in a similar manner. Tap the top switch to start the simulation more quickly.

Cheers. The transistor blew when trying to power 100V on a standard joule thief. The little cap from the base of Q2 prevented this nicely. 2.4V rechargeables run an 8 piece 12V LED quite brightly.
