4 sequential signals, like a 2-bit counter with a decoded output. This is more compact in some circumstances, notably when the initialization pulse circuit (left side) can also be used for other things. In fact, it's equal size if you just use the +5V supply.
I plan to use 2 of these in my LED matrix and serial memory, because I want to simulate persistence of vision. That requires capacitors, but EC's logic gates can't supply enough current to charge them in 1/16 cycle (unless I switch to bulbs).
@jason9: This will also be useful in the computer, replacing the downbeat generator and providing the full 4 pulses with only 2 or 3 more components.
