Motor Control V2 POT and MOSFET

One of my first circuits and starting to understand how this works. But both the Flyback Diode and the MOSFET are still confusing on how they work and what the values mean that are changeable in EveryCircuit. This circuit work on here but only if you restart after changing the potentiometer. Otherwise it takes a long time for the motor to slow down. This is in theory a motor control that works on a 9v battery with salvaged parts from an xbox controller and other circuit boards. If anyone has ideas on how to make it better within the confines of using salvaged material. Please comment and let me know.

Your load, in this case the motor, should be on the high side of the mosfet. That diode isn't a flyback diode. A flyback diode goes across the motor from the negative to positive side. Also, a potentiometer isn't the best way to control the speed of a motor. Pulse width modulation (PWM) would be much better.

Look at this. You can change the width setting on the second voltage source I added to speed up and slow down the motor. http://everycircuit.com/circuit/5749648152330240

311000 rpm is quite fast, don't you think ;)
