Without the diode, the inductor would apply a high reverse voltage across the switch when it commutes from on to off. The diode is in the reverse polarization when the switch is on and directly polarized when the switch turns off, draining the energy stocked in the inductor, doing the reverse voltage be drastically lower than the circuit without this protection. The switch use to be a bjt, mosfet or another electronic switch, normally those components are expensive in power electronics, without the diode, the switch will be damaged.

Usually an inductor of such value would have a much higher DC resistance than 100mohm. 100ohm would be an inductor of 20-30mH. Maybe a few ohms for 600mH.
