Turn the button "on" then turn it back "off". You will see the voltage gets high enough to light the LED. It raises through the inductor, then discharges through the 1mF capacitor and charges the 500uF capacitor.

I dunno if this works - how is 1V DC going to overcome the resistance of a 5 Henry inductor

It has to charge for a few seconds in the coil and the resistance lowers as you need to turn it back off.
