There are many different ways to connect transistors with different loads. I don't think that any of those is wrong, it just depends on the application. (Experts, please correct me if I am wrong)
It matters where you connect the load, in this case a LED, because different configuration will require a different voltage source and as you may notice from the examples will provide a different current in the circuit.
In my tests the LED had to have the current flow around 20mA, and where the current was exceeding a lot the 20mA I have set up a solution with a resistor connected to base of transistor (in a separate circuit close to the original one).
