Using the internal SR Flip-Flop of the 555 timer, it can act as an inverting Schmitt Trigger by itself. High and low trigger voltages are dictated by the 3 identical resistors in series built inside the 555 chip which is connected to Vcc and GND. This sets the triggers at (1/3)Vcc and (2/3)Vcc.
