Interesting simple and my first work. Can anyone explain to me how this works and why??

when the AC voltage on the cathode is low, it makes the led forward voltage drop great enough for current to flow

Oh ok thank you for the explanation. I'm still new to electronics and thought I would toy around with simple circuits before more complex ones.
