Using a 2N2222 as a 12 volt switch on the lowside with a 5 volt trigger.

Add a 1M pull down resistor between base and ground so base isn’t floating with switch open. More important, reduce base current, and stop transistor burning out, by adding a 47k resistor in series with base to stop 2A base current!
