Basic 555 PWM. The variable resistor sets the duty cycle. The 330 ohm resistor at the output is there to limit current to LED. The top diode is the charging diode and the bottom is the discharging diode. Shottky diodes will work great for high switching speeds/frequencies. The zener diode keeps the 555 power supply to 5v. All this powers a transformer at resonance.
