A Basic Circuit design, no on\off switch or fusing. 
Although the circuit looks ok and I have seen it used with a multi pole change over contactor, if one pole hangs up it can get exciting, for this reason this circuit is considered illegal in many parts of the world.

i tried to make one pole 'hang up', but never found a short circuit, only that the motor would refuse to run one way. what's the 'exciting' thing?

@eekee, the hang up is a mechanical fault, and the exciting thing is the amount of arc one can get out of a contactor ...

@BillyT: Ah, thanks. I tried to simulate a mechanical fault by connecting a coil to + or 0V instead of the switch. I guess hang-up is the way conductors don't like to separate when carrying a lot of current. I think that's the reason for carbon loaded contacts, but it's been a long time since I read about it.
