I saw this circuit on more than 20 pages with slight variations. I'm not a professional with electronics and am having some trouble getting it to work here. I'm not sure how to connect the voltage source and ground components. Any suggestions?

ground goes to the negative terminal on the voltage source. also need a ground on the output side of the transformer

"ground" just means that node is going to be the reference from which you measure all voltage from; so consider ground to be zero.

Thanks faceblast. I did as you suggested and added ground on negative and the transformer output and the circuit runs now. Next problem, I think, is that the output doesn't look like I would expect it to.

Increase the simulation speed and ground the 555 and it works fine
