I know a person who has been making vast sums of money by registering patents in USA, Hong Kong and elsewhere. All the patents he has obtained, pertain to public domain circuitry that we have been using for decades. Once he has the next patent, he then sells it to big corporations. I specifically detest this trend and have said to his face that this is both immoral and counterproductive. In reality most electronic development and invention has not been accomplished by big corporations. Instead it has been pioneered by small groups or by people working largely on their own.

Yes, this is the theory. In Switzerland, Germany & UK, it is still impossible to patent inventions which are public domain. However USA wants to patent everything... Even your DNA!

Of course patents do allow and have always allowed anybody to read through the details, obtain ideas and subsequently modify the design such that it falls outside the scope of the patent!
