Put LDR where variable resistor is the led should fade up when full dark and fade off when light you will get a indication of how dark the environment is the brighter the led more darker the environment this circuit is a rough guide you will need to experiment the voltage on the 220 ohm needs to be about 4 volts for led to turn on at full brightness so dimension your base resistor accordingly
