Because the and gate needs 2 high inputs to have a high output

The way you've built them, their inputs are high, or low, or off- but there is no off in digital logic. Notice the gate turning dark and grey? This indicates that it is no longer part of the circuit or, it is off. If you're going to use switches, each input for each gate needs a SPDT switch, with one pole tied to +, and the other tied to ground..

It's because you are applying level logic one or Z in a input and zero or Z in the other

Try switches that change between 1 and 0 in every input you have.

So I replaced the SPST with SPDT for both of them. It worked for the AND but now when I flip the switch for the OR the voltage source shorts when it isnt supposed to considering I wired it just like the AND gate circuit

The solution is apparent- now your switches only deliver a high, or positive signal to the inputs. Make it possible for each input to be able to receive a high or a low signal. You're on the right track...

Nope, not yet. But keep trying- I would rather see you find the solution yourself than just tell you how to do it. You will feel more rewarded having done it on you're own. Don't give up!..

Way to go @Idemss, I knew you could do it! Looks good- you've even got current limiting resistors in place, well done. Now on to bigger and better (and more difficult) things!.. ;^)
