The 2.2kOhm at left push button is redundant and the switch can be directly connected to the collecor of the PNP transistor, check this http://everycircuit.com/circuit/5034471557169152

Could you give an application example for this circuit? I.e. what kind of device and why it would be needed? For us beginners... Thanks!

@treeski3, here the relay is simply driving a couple of LED’s to give a visual display of the switching. Relays are often used where you want isolation between circuits, for example, you may have a low voltage circuit (such as this) controlling a mains voltage lamp. Relay contacts are physically and electrically isolated from the relay coil. Hope this helps. Happy to explain further or try Google.

It wasn't a question if it still works. The point is, this resistor is redundant, or in other words its waste of material.
