Do you not think a diode across the relay coil would protect the transistor of destruction by back emf ?

without a diode in parallel with the coil of the relay, your transistor will blowout, a collector resistor will be very good accepted

While flywheel diodes are a good idea, they are not as critical as seams to be suggested here. A lot of modern control relays have indicating leds built-in, and the circuits use them for flywheel control instead of individual diodes.
