To let the SCR works as we study, First close the switch connecting base of transistor to ground but at the same time let the gate switch open. Now close the anode to cathode circuit by closing the A-k switch. You will see there is no current flowing throw SCR. Now turn the switch OFF that connects base to ground and then apply the gate voltage by closing the switch. At that time you will see the SCR starts conducting.
