In a direct current circuit, a capacitor gradually charges up to the potential difference of the circuit. Once fully charged, the capacitor blocks further flow of current. If the circuit polarity is reversed, the capacitor discharges, releasing the stored energy until it becomes neutral. This behavior of a capacitor in a direct current circuit allows it to store and release electrical energy.
