Transistor is a tiny, fast on/off electric-controlled switch (instead of slow mechanical switches with moving parts). 

Millions of transistor are used (inside our phones and laptops). 

For this circuit, the switch uses a tiny current to control the lamp.

But unlike a mechanical switch, the transistor has a voltage turn on threshold, and also can be turned partially on using a lesser voltage and or current, thus it amplifies the signal that is used to turn it on.
