the PWM-encoder is a stand in for the arduino ”analogWrite()”function. The signal then goes through a 2nd order lowpass filter, and then to a ”sample and hold” the sample and hold is clocked by one of the inputs to the PWM-encoder, but goes through a comparator first so that the pulse width is short.

You can increase the PWM frequency up to 32kHz and then add a low-pass filter at 20kHz and a buffer to get a simpler circuit that works
