Each side is driven with a signal transistor eg BC337, and the power through the motor can be tuned by the current into the base of these.  This configuration doesn't allow braking though. 

Flywheel diodes redirect the EMF from the motor when it stops or changes direction.  Important for protecting your rig from reverse voltage spikes (but not your power supply).
