A simple set up of both NPN and PNP transistors.
NPN - Not Pointing iN 
PNP - Pointing iN Permanently

NPN - Positive to switch gate
PNP - Negative to switch gate

NPN  can switch higher voltages but PNP it is very difficult so best to keep low.

Have a play with values and learn about the backbone of electronics.

Good information, except for the voltage polarities, when the layouts, voltage levels & components are changed to all be the same EC gives the same outputs.
