Note that it is very difficult to precisely align a 1k pot to a resistance below 100 ohms because of mechanical drifting. That's why people use phase control or PWM circuits. If you are not willing to use a dimmer circuit, you should use a log pot. Again, a precise control over the brightness is difficult to obtain.
