Reverse polarity protection with indication.
Short circuit protection with indication.

3 Leds or 1 RGB LED.
-5v input, reverse polarity (Blue).
5v input (Green).
Short circuit (Red).

Left side is the safety circuit. Right side is an amplifier with a short switch as an example. 

Things to try:
Flip the source.
Flip the switch.
Adjust the pot to change the max current

Yes, it is boring, but useful when you dont have a nice power supply.
