You can have any high and even unrealistic gain from a BJT. It depends on the collector resistance which can be extremly high! What you have here are two current source which working against each other. Only if both current sources are identical, the voltage at out is half the supply. If the current is a little different it will significate change the out voltage. EC does give you identical components and does not alter them by temperatur, voltage or aging. For extremly high gain its unrealistic to make this stable on a breadboard. But its not an EC issue or fake. The price for high gain is very low bandwidth and instability for the operating point! Cuz, the higher the gain the higher the output resistance which does narrowo the bandwidth significant! Hope this helps and maybe i can make an example circuit the next days.

It's a voltage to current converter with a 1A/V ratio with a 10MOhm leak from the output which means a maximum voltage gain of 10'000'000V/V or 10MV/V!
