Obtaining Diode V-I characteristic

Using a  10 Ohm pot,different voltages are applied to the diode where the ensuing currents  are noted. Note that the battery voltage is 1V, the diode saturation current  is chosen as 1 pA, and the diode forward resistance is 1 Ohm. Proper calculations confirms the voltage and current measurements shown.

A second setup is to unearth the bottom lead of the pot. Choose pots of 10,20,30,40,and 50 Ohm values. Note now the values of   the diode current and voltages.

Comment on the relative merits of the two circuits.
