Where do we get a pulse generator, in reality?

A simple 555 timer in astable mode such as with many police flashing light circuits here on EC can be adapted with a suitable choice of cap and variable resistor to be used as a pulse generator.

@dwm. When your voltage increases at the transistor emitter, the base current also increases to an unacceptable level....,some work needed on this perhaps?
