Imagine using a opto-coupler for the transistor to connect to, for example, and arduino, and the inductor being a solenoid. The circuit would isolate from the arduino so the spike of the inductor wouldn't hurt the arduino. Other protection includes the diode in parallel with the inductor, and the Zener protecting a power mosfet.
